How do I record and play demos?

Recording requires entering a few commands that can be done manually each time but are most easily done via a script.

First, search and locate the q3config.cfg file that is in your ExcessivePlus directory (folder).  Next, open it, add the following line to the “bind” section, and save the file:

bind x “vstr record”

This means that when you press “x” the demo will begin and when you press “x” again the demo will stop.  I only use “x” as an example.  Please use any key you wish that is not already assigned.

Second, download the following two scripts and put them into your ExcessivePlus directory (folder).

dp.cfg

do.cfg

dp.cfg is a recording script that you should use if you will be recording AND playing.

do.cfg is a recording script that you should use if you will be recording but NOT playing.

The difference is that the former has less quality but will not lag you while you play while the second has better quality that may cause you some lag if you were to play.  Referees and observers of Clan Wars/Fun Wars and Tournaments will use the latter.

To record while playing:

1. Open the console and type the following then press enter:

/exec dp

2. Press the key that you assigned to the bind.

To record while observing:

1. Open the console and type the following then press enter:

/exec do

2. Press the key that you assigned to the bind.

To stop recording:

1. Press the key that you assigned to the bind.

To play a demo:

1a. If you have E+ 2.2b or recorded a demo then a directory (folder) called “demos” will have been created within your ExcessivePlus directory (folder).  If so, start OpenArena, click on Mods, choose Excessive Plus 2.2b, then click on Demos and select the demo you want to view.

1b. If you have NOT recorded a demo then you may need to manually create a directory (folder) called “demos” within your ExcessivePlus directory (folder).  Next copy a demo to this directory (folder), then start OpenArena, click on Mods, choose Excessive Plus, then click on Demos and select the demo you want to view.
